Own-brand DAB+ radios
In the UK, the last remaining bastion of died-in-the-wool, "original-flavour"-only DAB receivers is the range of own-brand radios sold by the major supermarket chains. Which brand will be last to switch? With the new UK digital radio tick mark now specifying DAB+ capability (among other welcome things) to qualify, it can't be long now. With DAB+ services already on air across the UK, and more certain to follow, Wohnort recommends that the own-brand ranges be avoided until they include DAB+.

In France, the regulator has revoked the authorisation issued to Skyrock to broadcast on the regional ensemble ALSACE+.
The broadcaster had informed the regulator that it did not intend to make use of the capacity that had been allocated to it.
The unused capacity will probably be re-advertised at a future date.

The UK regulator has revoked the licence awarded to the operator of the small-scale ensemble for Warminster, Devizes & Trowbridge. West Wiltshire Digital Radio CIC had requested that the award be withdrawn, primarily on the basis that one proposed transmission site would require further civil engineering work and planning consent and that this work would not be completed within the 18-month statutory window. The operator expressed a wish that the area be re-advertised. Ofcom has stated that it intends to re-advertise the area in Round Six.

In Italy, a new ensemble is reported to have popped up on Block 8C. Radio Digitale Veneto is reported to have twenty audio services on board currently: Easy Rock, Radio 60/70/80, Radio Bruno, Radio Bruno Nord, Radio Gamma Regione Romagna, Radio Mantova, Radio Oreb, Radio Padova, Radio Pico, Radio San Bonifacio, Radio Ancheviva, Radio Stella News, Radio Studio Delta, Radio Universal, Radio Viva, Radio Wow 1, Radio Wow 3, Stereo Radio, Super Network and Vibra FM.

In Germany, the media regulator in Baden-Württemberg has advertised capacity on the Block 11B ensemble OAS BW. 54 CU are on offer, corresponding to a service running at 72 kbit/s at EEP 3-A. Closing date for applications is January 26th 2024.
The advertised capacity will become available from April 1st 2024.

Snapshot added of the Spanish ensemble DAB+ CDS, serving the Costa del Sol.
Fifteen audio services are currently being carried, one at EEP 1-A and the others at EEP 3-A.
This ensemble is operating as an MFN on at least four frequencies, with Blocks 7B, 8A, 9A and 10A being observed. Only some of the frequencies transmitted TII.
The Extended Country Code (E3) observed on this ensemble was not the correct value (E2) for a Spanish ensemble. The combination of ECC E3 and Country ID 2 is intended for an Irish ensemble.

BRUNO BRESCIA and Radio Zainet are each broadcasting in DAB+ at 48 kbit/s.

The new "small-scale" ensemble for Aberdeen North is reported to have popped up on Block 9C. Aberdeen DAB is reported to have one Test DAB+ service on board currently, running at 72 kbit/s.

January 16th
Snapshot added of an ensemble broadcasting on Block 8A in Tenerife. OpenDigitalRadio has sixteen services on board. The Service Labels of most of them will look very familiar to UK readers. With the exception of one service, none of the Long Service Labels contains more than eight characters. The combination of Country ID and Extended Country Code used by this ensemble would normally signify a French ensemble. The Country IDs used for the services on this ensemble would normally signify French services and one Swiss service. The DLS of most of the services appeared to be live and immediately relevant. The coverage of this ensemble appears to reach only certain parts of Santa Cruz. At the time of the observation, two services appeared to be running without audio streams.

The UK regulator has launched a consultation on a proposal from the operator of the Bradford "small-scale" ensemble to use a new transmission site at Northcote, to replace an existing site at Eccleshill, where the building is to be redeveloped. Ofcom has invited comments on the proposal and says it is minded to approve the request. The consultation closes on February 8th 2024.

The UK regulator has extended the licences of the trial "small-scale" licences for London, Portsmouth, Brighton and Aldershot until December 31st 2025. The existing licences expired at the end of 2023. Ofcom is currently assessing applications for new multiplexes in the south east of England.

In Bosnia-Herzegovina, a layer of coverage composed of nine regions has been advertised. Some of the frequency allocations are temporary until an Adriatic-Ionian Group Agreement comes into force. The costs of any subsequent channel changes are to be borne by the successful applicant. The closing date is February 12th 2024.

On the UK ensemble D1 National, the service Classic FM has switched to DAB+ and is now broadcasting at 64 kbit/s. Three existing DAB+ services have increased their bitrates from 32 to 40 kbit/s - Capital UK, Gold UK and Heart UK. Snapshot updated.

On the UK local ensemble South East Wales, the service Nation 80s has popped up and has ceased on the ensemble Cardiff. The service Easy Radio has moved in the opposite direction, from South East Wales to Cardiff.

The UK regulator has launched a consultation on a proposal from the licence-holder of the Winchester "small-scale" ensemble to use a new transmission site at Flagstaff Stables. The previous operator went into Voluntary Liquidation and the licence and broadcast assets were transferred to Winchester DAB Ltd. The new operator was unable to negotiate the continued use of Crabwood Farm and transmissions ceased in November 2023. Ofcom has invited comments on the proposal and says it is minded to approve the request. The consultation closes on January 30th 2024.
